Non-Insured Health Benefit (NIHB)

Counselling benefits for eligible Status individuals

NIHB Coverage

NIHB coverage may require prior approval depending on your province and whether the provider is registered with NIHB. Because I am not currently a registered NIHB provider, NIHB typically requires a pre-authorization request before counselling sessions can begin.

The general process usually includes the following steps:

  1. Confirm eligibility with NIHB. You will need your NIHB client number or status number.

  2. Obtain a referral from a physician or nurse practitioner, as NIHB often requires a medical referral for mental health counselling with a non-registered provider.

  3. Submit a pre-authorization request to NIHB. This request includes the referral and details about the counselling services being requested.

  4. Wait for NIHB approval. Once approval is granted, you can begin sessions.

  5. Payment and reimbursement. In most cases, clients pay for sessions and submit receipts to NIHB for reimbursement.

We can discuss this process during your consultation, and I can help guide you through the steps and provide any documentation needed to support your request.
